Hebrew support in Debian

This is an attempt to make Hebrew more usable for new users of Debian, to help make Debian the preferred distribution for Hebrew users and to ease the conversion of Hebrew speaking users into Debian GNU/Linux.

Currently Debian has quite a few packages that help Hebrew users, but a new user needs to install them himself. The best thing would be that if a user chose Hebrew in his installation he'll get the Hebrew related packages automatically on installation. For those users who want Hebrew support but not Hebrew language a solution should come as well, but since they will be more advanced users this option is not as critical.

Debian Hebrew install CD

An install CD of Debian-Hebrew RC2 for i386 has been prepared, it is available for download via the mirror site.

Can I help ?

Most of the work is not even programming or too technical, it is in deciding what should be part of Debian Hebrew, and helping make sure it is easy for a layperson to use it.

Packages and other downloads

Debian Hebrew Repository

The Debian Hebrew project provides its packages in the official Debian archive. There is no need for special settings for Debian unstable/testing users.

To try this project, run as root:

This will install all Hebrew related packages and reconfigure your system for full Hebrew usage (including Hebrew interface). You can see a screenshot tutorial of the process.
